When I was around 12 or 13 I travelled with my father back to his birthplace, a farm in Riviersonderend in the North Cape (translated from Afrikaans, it means: River without end). It was a strange journey and I have tried a number of times to capture his sense of disappointment and my intuitive sense of this emotion in a short story.
Scottish PEN online magazine PENings published the story 'Riviersonderend' in their last magazine and I loved the photograph chosen to accompany the piece. I also received an email from someone who had undertaken a similar journey (only this time as an adult) to his mother's farm in Ladybrand in the Easter Cape. It felt wonderful somehow to connect via this story with another traveller exploring his past and revisiting a family home.
